Megan hopped off the bed and met his mother halfway. His wife threw her arms around Mrs. William’s shoulders and hugged her. Once again, his heart softened.

“Sally, you shouldn’t have to apologize.” Megan chuckled. She stepped back and took the flowers.

Mrs. Williams met his stare, so he nodded. “My wife is right. Please, have a seat. I’d stand, but my legs didn’t weather well in the accident.”

His mother’s lips quivered. “May I be so bold as to...ask for a hug?”

Liquid built in his eyes, but this time he didn’t will them to leave. “I would like that very much...Mother.”

A cry tore from Sally’s throat when she rushed to the bed. Her arms were wrapped around his shoulders too tight, but he pushed away the pain shooting through his body and concentrated on his heart pounding against his ribs, growing with every beat.

He moved his stiff arms around her briefly, then let them fall by his side. She stepped back and wiped her wet eyes.

“Thank you,” she whispered, then cleared her cracked voice. “Thank you for accepting me.”

A tear fell down his cheek. “I should thank you for not giving up hope of finding your son.”

She clasped his hands. “I’ll never lose you again, I promise.”

He nodded. “You’re right on that account, especially if my wife agrees to stay here in California with me.”

Megan moved beside him, her fingers massaging in a gentle circular motion on his shoulder. Her eyes twinkled. “You are my life. I will go wherever you go.”

He winked at her then switched his gaze back to his mother. “It appears as if you’re stuck with me now.”

His mother laughed and hugged him again. “My dream has come true.” She kissed his cheek. “You have made my life complete.”

He reached up and held onto Megan’s hand and squeezed. “I know exactly how you feel, Mother.”

Sally pulled away and wiped her eyes. “I will leave you two alone. Please send me a note to let me know when I can come again. We have so much catching up to do.”

“I will. I promise.”

Megan walked his mother to the door and gave her a hug before she closed the door. She turned back to him, tears glistening in her eyes. “It pleases me to see you so happy.”

He grinned. “You make me happy.”

She moved away from the door and came toward him. “And, you make me happy.”

“So then what are you doing fully dressed when you should be in bed lying beside me?”

She laughed and bent to kiss his lips. He tried to keep the kiss soft, but it was difficult. Her moan matched his, but she withdrew before he could bring another pleasurable sound from her again.

“Edmund, both of us are weak. We cannot do what you are thinking.”

“No, but I can hold you.”

She nodded. “I would enjoy that very much.”

“Will you join me, then?”

Her eyebrows arched. “Edmund, you’re still such a rogue. Is it any wonder I fell like a sunken ship when you seduced me in the woodsman’s cottage?”

His eyes widened. “Me? Oh, no, my love.
You
were the one seducing.”

“I think not, my dear husband.”

He laughed. “Your innocence seduced me.”

“But I’m not innocent anymore, so does that mean you don’t want me?”

“On the contrary, my love. I want you even more now.”

She crawled into bed beside him. Snuggling next to him, she fit her body against his side. “Promise me something, Megan.”

“What’s that?”

“Our lives will be like this forever.”

She shook her head. “No, Edmund. Our lives will be better.”

He bent his head and sealed the promise with a kiss...a kiss that would evolve into a lifetime of love.
