“You started it,” Layton shot back. “You were talking bullshit.”

“Layton Malcolm Pierce-Cunningham, that’s enough,” Byron said. His voice was full of authority, and both young men froze. “It doesn’t matter who started it. You damaged Corbin’s bike. And you, Corbin, I don’t appreciate you saying you’ll kick his ass.”

“I’m sorry, Mr. Cunningham,” Corbin muttered. “I didn’t mean it.”

“We know,” Skylar replied. “Don’t worry, Corbin. We’ll pay you back for the bike.”

“I had a date,” Corbin said mournfully. “Now I’ll never get there in time.”

Skylar could almost feel the satisfaction emanating from his son, and he sighed, suspecting he knew exactly what Corbin had said to piss Layton off.

Morgan appeared from the house, looking amused and completely relaxed. “Hi, Dad, Daddy. Sorry about this.”

“Not your fault,” Skylar replied automatically. It wasn’t anyone’s fault, just a far too precocious seahorse expressing his childish crush in a wrong way. The next ten years or so would be hell on poor Layton.

Sighing, Skylar gestured his sons to his car. Their friends were now coming out of the house in bulk. “Skylar, I don’t know what to say.” Shiloh seemed embarrassed. “I should have been watching them.”

“It’s fine. Layton’s a wily one.”

Byron headed inside and brought the children’s things, while Skylar stayed to have a small talk with Corbin. He didn’t actually tell Corbin what he thought about Layton. After all, at this age, Layton couldn’t even consider any type of romantic relationship. However, he did apologize and guarantee Layton would get over his naughtiness in time.

Corbin was a good boy, so after stealing another look toward the car, he let things go. It helped that Liam offered to lend Corbin his car. Apparently, Corbin was quite popular with the females in the part, in spite of being a lynx.

At last, they said good-byes to their friends and drove off toward their home. As the miles of road loomed ahead of them, Skylar wondered what else the future would bring for him and his family.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

A native Romanian, Scarlet was born in 1986 and grew up an avid fan of Karl May and Jules Verne, reading fantasy stories and adventure. Later, when she was out of fantasy stories to read, she delved into her mother’s collection of books and, of course, stumbled onto romance.

As a writer though, Scarlet Hyacinth was born one sunny summer day, when a dear friend of hers—the same friend who introduced her to GLBT fiction—proposed they start writing a story of their own. As it turns out, the two friends never did finish that particular story, but Scarlet discovered she had a knack for writing and ended up starting to write individually. And so, between working on her dissertation, studying for exams, and reading yaoi manga, she started writing the Kaldor Saga. Along the way, Scarlet met a lot of wonderful people who supported her, and in the end, she found her story a home and, in the process, fulfilled a beautiful dream.
