“You know this goes higher than Garrison. Someone gave you the orders.”

“Yes, they did and I wish I knew who gave them the order. Either way, it’s for other departments to handle now. Your only concern is getting healthier so we can get you behind a desk. Then you work your way back into the field. You’re one of my best and you are a friend, just follow the doctor’s orders please.”

“I don’t have to like it.”

“I wouldn’t expect you to.”

With that Tyler nods his head and leaves. I’m left alone to the thoughts in my head and the pain in my chest. Reaching over to the IV Drip I push the button for more pain meds. Thankfully, that will help make all of this fade away into nothingness.

Chapter Thirteen

It’s been about fourteen months of physical therapy, shrink visits and some fights, but things are seemingly back to normal. Frankie and I have been working on a schedule for Chase to have baseball, lacrosse and basketball all in the same spring to summer months. It’s been a very large challenge, but one we take in stride.

Eventually we will make him choose which sport he actually wants to play, until then we have a great set of parents that help us car pool him from location to location. Apparently this is normal for the kids in his classes. They all love to play all the sports they can get their hands on. I will admit I relish the time I get to watch him play anything. He reminds me so much of myself when I was his age. He can just pick up a sport and run with it. The major difference is that he’s better than I ever could be.

Frankie and I have been doing much better in the fourteen months. We’ve learned to communicate more which has come out of therapy truthfully. I need to learn to open up more and tell her what I’m feeling. She moved into our bedroom about a month ago and with the exception of her snoring – it’s good. She turned the old room into an office. She likes to work from home if she can. It’s a nice change.

Water splashes my face and I laugh as Chase jumped in the pool and swims after Frankie. They’re my life and they make me happier than I’ve ever been. Looking around the pool, seeing my friends and family, makes me realize how I’ve been blessed. On top of that, I have a partner that I like for once. Tyler made Will my partner-in-crime at my request. Granted we are still taking it slow due to my semi-desk duty, but Will is okay with that. We’ll get back out there when the doc’s and my body says it’s all clear. I’m almost there.

Standing up I walk inside the house and down the stairs to the basement. Opening the door to my game room, I close it behind me. Flipping on the switch, I illuminate the photo and information covered walls. Each image with listed information underneath it. String tracing one peg to another. No matter how amazing my life might be upstairs, down here it’s a painful reminder of the one who got away. Call it an obsession. Call it whatever you like. I know eventually he’ll make a mistake and I’ll be there to catch him.

Sitting down in my chair, I look at photos from the latest crime scene. My mother’s voice echoes in my head, “A woman’s work is never done.”
