“Well, you’ll never get me to just walk out of here with you.”

“I know,” Jeffrey said. “A little tap on the head with the butt of the gun and we can get you out of here nice and quiet. Then it’s back to the cabin for you, where one day they’ll find your rotted corpse.”

She could hear Damien’s voice in her head.

Trust us to protect you.

“I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere with you,” she told him.

“Oh? And who’s going to stop me?”

She whistled sharply, her signal that the players were in place and she’d found out what she needed to know. At once she saw the shadows moving towards the house at lightning speed, running across the broad expanse of lawn. Her heart rate sped up with anticipation.

“They will,” she said, as four wolves raced into the kitchen.

Jeffrey tried to aim his gun at one of them, any of them, his eyes suddenly wild.

“Jesus!” he screamed. “Where did they come from?”

He tried again to aim the gun but two of the wolves knocked him down before he could get off a shot. One of them stood over him, paws on his chest, fangs hovering over his throat, while the other one picked up the gun in its jaws and dropped it at Lauren’s feet. Jeffrey’s face was contorted with fear.

Niema tried to run from the room but a wolf blocked her and backed her up against a wall, growling ferociously. Her mouth was open but there was no sound coming from it, her eyes wide with fright. The other wolves moved close to her, growling louder, effectively trapping her in place.

“Did you get her yet?” Lauren’s father strode into the kitchen.

Mack, the shimmery white wolf, was on him before he could move, knocking him down, pawing at him, fangs bared, a menacing snarl rumbling from its throat.

“Oh, Jesus,” he screamed, his voice high and thin. “Where did they come from? My God, this one’s going to kill me.” He tried to move but the wolf was too heavy and too determined. “Help,” he called. “Jeffrey? Niema?”

But Jeffrey and Niema had their own problems. Each time one of them tried to move, the wolves guarding them pressed closer. The air was rife with the smell of fear and panic.

And Lauren, who stood to the side watching, was enjoying every minute of it.

Then Mickey was there. “Lauren? What’s that noise?” He shrieked as the silver wolf, Luke, backed him menacingly up against a wall. Mickey threw his arms up in front of him, his face drained of colour. “Holy shit! Get it away from me. Get it the fuck away from me.

God. Jeffrey? Dad? Shit, Jeffrey, where’s your gun?” His eyes tracked wildly over to Lauren.

“Is this your idea of a joke? Bringing savage animals into our house?” He tried to push himself into the wall as Luke nudged him with his snout.

“It’s
my
house,” she told him calmly. “And I’ll bring in whoever or whatever I want.

Maybe if you all hadn’t been so damned anxious to get rid of me none of this would have happened.”

“We’ll take it all back.” Jeffrey was having trouble getting the words out with the wolf’s face so close to his. “Anything. Everything. It’s all yours. Just get these wild animals off us.”

“Find something to tie them up.”

She heard Damien as if he’d been speaking aloud.

“Lauren.” Niema’s voice squeaked in terror. “Please. Pick up Jeffrey’s gun and shoot these animals. Oh, my God.”

She was trembling so hard Lauren wondered why she didn’t fall to the floor.

“Not a chance.”

“Where did these wolves come from?” Her father’s words had a strangled sound to them.

“They’re my friends,” she said softly, making herself move.

In the mudroom she found several lengths of rope. With snarling wolves at their throats no one made much of a protest when she tied them up. The moment she had them immobilised the wolves backed away and took off through the open door. As instructed, Lauren called the sheriff and asked as calmly as she could for them to send some deputies to her house. She knew the Rhodes name would get immediate action.

“I’ll sue your ass,” Jeffrey said, feeling stronger with the wolves gone. “No one will ever believe your story.”

Smiling, Lauren reached into her pocket and pulled out a small voice-activated recorder that had been on since she walked into the house. “Maybe not, but they’ll believe what’s on here.”

“You bitch,” Niema screamed, struggling against the ropes holding her. “You stinking bitch.”

Lauren gave her a nasty smile. “Sticks and stones and all that.” And she went outside to wait for the sheriff, feeling truly safe for the first time in hours.

“It’s always about the money,” Damien said.

He’d retrieved his clothes from the car they’d parked down the road and had Luke drop him off at the house so he could be with Lauren when the sheriff came. The four people taken into custody had been shocked to have him come walking in and began cursing Lauren steadily and colourfully. They did their best to deny everything, even trying to accuse Lauren of being at fault, but she had the irrefutable evidence. At last they and the recording had been taken away. Damien would take Lauren to the sheriff’s office in the morning to give her statement.

For the moment they were alone in the house. Naked. In her bed.

Damien had just spent a good half an hour licking every inch of her body, rousing her almost to the point of madness.

“Should we discuss what you’re going to do about the estate?” he teased.

“Now?” she asked in a shaky voice. “Could we talk about that some other time?”

“I can multitask,” he said with a grin, lying next to her with an arm around her as his fingers stroked her clit and her pussy. She was deliciously wet. Soon, he told himself. Soon he would bind her to him permanently. “Can you?”

Lauren groaned.

The Sentinels planned to find new attorneys to help her implement the will and manage the estate. She could have as much or as little to do with it as she chose. But that wasn’t a decision she had to make right at that moment.

“I don’t even want the damn money,” she told him. “I think the attorneys I hire can help me appoint the right people to run the companies. The rest of it I’m going to put in a trust and use to fund Sentinels’ operations. There are sure to be people who can’t pay you that need your help.”

“Good idea.” He bent his head and tugged a nipple with his teeth. “Will you come back to Texas with me? Live with me as my mate? Marry me?”

“I’ll go anywhere with you,” she told him desperately, “if you’ll just get to the task at hand. Right now.”

His laugh was a low rumble. “In that case.”

He turned her over onto her stomach, spread the cheeks of her ass wide and lubricated her with the cream from her pussy. Then he lifted her to her hands and knees.

“Take a deep breath, Lauren, and let it out slowly. Come on, little one. I’m going to make you feel so good.”

She did as he told her, shaking with anticipation. Damien positioned the head of his cock at her anus and pushed slowly into her, giving one final thrust until she’d taken all of him. He paused, letting her adjust to him before he began driving into her, stroke after stroke. Reaching one hand around past her hip he found her clit and massaged it.

She whimpered as he hammered into her, again and again, stroking her clit.

Then, as if all the power in his body had been unleashed, he carried her over the edge with him. And as they shuddered together with the power of her release, he shouted one word.

“Mine.”

And she answered.

“Yes.”

About the Author

I always wanted adventure and change in my life, and I certainly got it. I grew up in Maine, a beautiful place to live, then lived in the Midwest and Florida. Now I make my home in the Hill Country of Texas, truly God's chosen place on earth. My husband, David, was a sixth generation Texan, tracing his roots here back to the time when Texas was a Republic, so retiring here was a dream we finally fulfilled.

I've had a lot of firsts in my life – first female sports report on The Michigan Daily at the University of Michigan; first woman to own a rock and roll agency in Detroit, the home of Motown; first woman president of the Pasco (Florida) Economic Development Council.

I graduated from the University of Michigan with a double major in English and History, and a minor in economics, and went on to have at least four careers. When my children were small, I satisfied my need for writing by working for weekly newspapers. I had a wild and wacky time managing rock and roll bands. I joined the insanity of retail with a string of shoe stores. I worked in fundraising, public affairs and community relations. But writing fiction was always my dream. I had a lot of stops and starts, but it wasn't until we retired that I could devote myself to it full time.

My wonderful husband, David, encouraged me and supported me in my dream and you’ll find a little of him in all my heroes. Our children are all grown and on their own, and are my biggest fans.

When I'm not writing I'm an avid reader—anything and everything—and watching football, especially my beloved Michigan Wolverines. David and I golf and target shoot, and of course enjoy life in the gorgeous Texas Hill Country, where most of my stories are based.
