“Just stay by my side, always…” I whispered, knowing that Aziz was now my whole life. There was no me without him.

“Always, Natalie. Always.”

Epilogue

I
put
the finishing touches on the canvas. That was the last of the paintings that I was slated to finish. It felt good to complete a commission. Artist’s block seemed a think of the past. Something from a different life.

I was a different Natalie back then. But then, Aziz had fallen from the sky.

And nothing had ever been the same.

“Hey Aziz!” Billy yelled from the diving rock on the pool. “Look at me!”

And then Billy jumped from the rock and made a giant cannonball splash into the pool.

“Hey, that’s pretty good mate!” Aziz cheered to Billy’s proud look. “Keep it up.”

We were back at the old house that Mom and I used to live in. Aziz had made sure that I never sold it and we visited at least once a month.

I was able to transfer some credits over and begin my graduate classes in Qumar, and the government even offered me a commission with a public arts project that I would be getting class credits for.

Aziz was on the phone with Michael, from News of the Times. “Mike, come on mate, don’t I always keep my word to you?” he cajoled into the phone.

I looked at the conversation with curious eyes. Aziz continued. “Didn’t I give you all the fucking exclusives on me and my bird after I announced, mate?” There was a pause on his side. Then he smiled. “Beautiful mate. You’re a fucking rockstar. I’ll have the Foundation send over all the details to you.”

He hung up the phone and I looked at him with wide eyes. “Well?” I asked. “Is he going to do it?”

Aziz nodded. “News of the Times has just agreed to give us reduced rates on our anti-poverty initiative. And Michael is going to cover it. Make it a story.”

I smiled and got up to hug him, straddling him. “That’s wonderful, babe,” I whispered into his ear.

The feel of my breath must have turned him on. I felt his hands descend down my back and grab my ass, squeezing it. I gasped and smiled at him.

But before we could do anything, his phone rang again. He looked at it, and picked it up and put it on speakerphone.

“Christine, how are you love?”

There was a pause and deep sigh from the other end of the line. “Aziz, my name is Nerissa. I told you this a year ago when I introduced myself.”

Aziz smiled. He loved needling her. I stayed, resting on Aziz’s chest, looking into his beautiful eyes.

“What can I do for you for you and yours?” Aziz asked.

“Well, Your Highness, it’s what we can do for you. We’ve found some extra accounts that we can use towards our US operations that had been overlooked before. John’s preparing the presentation. We’d like to go over it with you before you depart the country.”

“That’s great,” Aziz said. “I’ll stop by the offices tomorrow and we can sort it out.”

When the phone hung up, he looked at me. “Christine and her boyfriend are two great accountants. Couldn’t have asked to hire two better people.”

I remembered her trying to kiss Aziz and scowled. But I knew there was nothing there. Aziz had given them jobs when they were unemployed. To bring his mind back, I instead brought my hand down, descending to his crotch.

“Easy now, love,” he said with a smirk. I paused, and saw Mother and the Sultan coming outside.

“Samantha,” the Sultan said, coming outside with her. “It’s just that you need one remote to turn on the bloody thing. And then one remote for the volume, and then one remote to change channels. You lose track of the bloody thing!”

Mom gripped her lover’s arm, smiling at his consternation. “It’s not that hard Sayid,” she whispered. “You’re just not used to these things.”

“Qumar has the fourth highest per capita earnings in the world,” the Sultan chastised her. “Our subjects just go hiking.”

I rolled my eyes and Aziz laughed. Mom and the Sultan had been dating secretly for a while now – at least two years before Aziz had crashed in this year. It had only come to light as Aziz and I were getting married. Things were progressing with them alright, but they were keeping it quiet for now.

Aziz had turned on the grill, and was making us some steaks. He poured a glass of whiskey for his dad and for him, and the Sultan thanked Aziz. “Kind of reminds you of the cabin in the Alps, doesn’t it?”

“Yes,” we both said, my cheeks going red.

Mom saw it and laughed. “That bed has some great memories.”

I made a grimace as my mom smiled and Billy and his girlfriend Mary Zimmerman came over and poured themselves some juice.

“Where’s Hamid, Aziz?” Mom asked my husband.

“And where is Jasmine, dear?” the Sultan asked me, hearing my mom.

I looked at Aziz. “They asked for the week off,” I said to both. “To go up to Yellowstone.”

There was silence. And then a startled, “Oh,” from my mother. “I didn’t realize…”

“That my man was shagging her bird?” Aziz said with a grin. I rolled my eyes and Mom basically nodded her head.

“Since the wedding, yeah,” Aziz continued with a grin. “Little bit too much grappa at the reception and Jasmine Bow came out of his room the next morning. He’s already teaching her Thai.”

“Well good for them,” the Sultan said sitting down, looking every inch the suburban house-Dad. “Love strikes us all in mysterious ways, but when it does, it’s best not to fight it.”

“To not fighting love,” Aziz said as he raised his glass.

“To not fighting love,” we toasted back. I touched my glass to mother’s and took a sip of my wine.

Yes, life was perfect with my Sheikh.
