She had never seen her father move so fast nor had she been embraced so tight. But it was his laugh. A laugh she could not remember hearing. A laugh she would never forget. For her father's laugh was as big and bold and just as beautiful as the laugh from her man of Judah.
Epilogue
Ten months later
Hannah rested her weight on her elbows and tried to listen over the gurgle of the stream. “Did you hear a cry?”
“There is no one near.” Gil rolled on his side, wrinkling the blanket, and kissed the top of her hand. “If we return to the house, your mother will scold. She learned of my mother's stay with the baby. Joel has been fed and will sleep while we rest.”
She gazed at the lush fig trees and breathed in their roasted grain and sweet citrus scent. They were as full and green as Gil had relayed on the mountain. “How different this place is than the dark caves.”
“I do not care to remember our journey to Aram.” A well-placed kiss on her neck brought her focus back to her husband. “I only care to remember your promise to come here with me.”
“When Naabak barely lived, I did not think I would see this place on this side of heaven.” She smoothed the cropped hair of his beard. “Will we ever see him again?”
Gil's face turned thoughtful. “I have no desire to leave my family or my land.”
“Nor do I.” She reached into her satchel and offered a pomegranate to Gil. “If you're hungry, this fruit is sweet.”
Gil raised an eyebrow. “How do you know? Did you glean it?”
“No. I tasted a tiny piece.”
“It won't pucker my lips?” He flashed a do-you-remember grin.
“It won't.” She stroked his cheek. “But I will.”
