“No, I’m glad you’re telling me. I’m just really surprised, I guess. But I can certainly relate to being overwhelmed by passion.”

“Yeah, but in this case passion is all we had. Granted, it was an incredible couple of weeks. Sneaking around and just going wild together. I won’t even tell you all the places we had sex. It was so unlike me. And I guess that was part of the appeal. We didn’t go on dates and hold hands. He didn’t want to talk about how my day was. We just got together to…do what we did. And it was fun. Blowing off steam, you know? But…eventually the novelty wore off, I guess. I felt like we were sleeping together, but I wasn’t sure if he even liked me. Once I started thinking that way, it was all over. There wasn’t even a big break-up scene or anything. One night we were all leaving a bar and Rick hung back to wait for me. But I just told him I didn’t think we could be together anymore. He didn’t put up a fuss. Just shrugged and said, ‘Fine,’ and that was it.”

“Really?”

“Almost. A couple times I caught him watching me, but he didn’t say anything, so neither did I. Time went by and it almost felt like it never happened. But then one day we were on the bus alone. I can’t even remember why now. But I was on my computer. He’d been in the back I think and then came up and sat down next to me. I asked him if he needed anything and he didn’t. We just sat there quietly for a while and then he put his hand on mine. I looked at him and he said – I’ll never forget it – he said, ‘There is nothing in this world that matters to me other than this band. But sometimes when I look at you I wish there was.’ I was as shocked as you look right now. I tried to talk to him, get more out of him. And I think that was my mistake. He’d opened up as much as he could, but got mad when I tried to make him say more.

“From then on we were oil and water. Arguing all the time about everything. I guess he felt vulnerable, maybe. And then before I knew it Ryan found out somehow and I was out.”

“Fuck,” I muttered before sitting back in my chair. “That’s intense.”

“Yup.”

“Well, I’m glad you told me. And I’m happy things worked out for you.”

“Thanks. Damn, I totally monopolized this conversation. What’s going on with you? Here alone?”

“No, Joe’s here too. Back at the hotel.”

“Romantic weekend?”

“It was supposed to be.”

“Oh, Liss.” She patted my arm. “Look, I don’t know what’s going on, but I know this. You and Joe have something beautiful and rare. Do not let all this crap come between you. He needs you. He’s a better man with you in his life. I saw that. Everyone sees it.”

I nodded and a tear rolled down my cheek. “I’m so afraid of losing him.”

“How can you be? That man would die for you. Maybe you’re really scared of that. That what you have is real. He’ll never walk away from you. Hell, he’d probably quit the band if it would make you happy.”

“No. I would never. He would never…”

“Open your eyes, girl. You’re the world to him. As much as he loves the job, and was born to do it, nothing matters more to him than you do. That’s a lot of pressure. But I’ve seen you together. There’s nothing you can’t do if you stay honest and open.”

I sighed and picked at the hem of my shirt. “You’re right. I’ve never felt like this and I don’t know how to handle it. But there’s no choice. I love him and I always will. We just have to figure things out together.”

“You got it.”

“Thank you, Beth. Once again you’re helping me so much.”

“You don’t need to thank me. Just…keep in touch this time, okay?”

“Of course. I’m starting school in the fall, but if you’re ever nearby we should do something.”

“I’d love that,” she said, smiling. “And look, if you and Joe decided to leave your room again, call me. We can have dinner.”

“That would be wonderful. I know he’d like to see you.” We exchanged information and hugged once more.

“Okay. I need to get back to my laundry and you need to get back to your man.”

Hunger and hurt forgotten, I nodded. “Talk to you soon, right?”

“You got it. Hey, I’ll get you a signed CD from Rob.”

“Awesome.” I left her, feeling like a weight had been lifted from my shoulders. I didn't know why hearing about her "relationship" had allowed me to let go of the stupid drama I'd created in my own, but it didn't matter. I was back on track and didn't want to waste another second.

By the time I got back to the hotel I was practically running. In the suite I expected to find that Joe was off doing whatever work Ryan needed, but he wasn’t. He was sitting on the bed, looking terrible. Well, as terrible as he was capable.

“Liss, where have you been?”

“It doesn’t matter I’m here now. And I’m so sorry.”

“I hate it when you run from me. I thought you might never come back.”

“You’re amazing. And wonderful. And I’m chickenshit.”

Joe guffawed. “What?”

“You terrify me. How much you love me and how much I love you. But I can’t get over that by running away. You deserve better. And so do I.”

He rose from the bed and swept me into his arms.

“Listen,” I continued. “I can’t promise I won’t get scared again. The bigger all of this gets, the more it worries me. But I want to be with you. I’m excited about this weekend and to go to Europe with you. I don’t have the words to tell you what you mean to me. But just know that you mean the world to me and I never want us to be apart. Trust in that.”

“I do,” he whispered. “Always.” And then he kissed me and everything else fell away. I gave in to what my heart knew, ignoring my fears, and let him love me.
