She was one of those tall amazon women with
big tits and a body full of curves. Her hair was almost red, but
she didn’t have freckles, just milky white skin that was hot to the
touch. Ian tried to avoid touching Kara. Deep down he was afraid if
he started touching her, he’d never stop. It wasn’t that he had a
problem finding willing women. Who knew, maybe if she had been
willing when they first met he wouldn’t have taken the time to get
to know her as well as he did now, but he did know her. And knowing
her, he didn’t want her messed up in any of his brother’s shit.

Ronan had asked Kara out too and she’d said
yes, damn it. But he’d cancelled on her twice and she didn’t give
him another chance. Ian had wanted to spit nails when he found out
she’d agreed to go out with Ronan. Ronan had asked her just to piss
Ian off and it had worked. Ronan was good at pushing Ian’s buttons.
Kara seemed to be a hot button with Ian.

“What happened once the cops showed up?”

“They asked me about a million questions then
took me to the ER to get checked out.”

“So what happened to your phone, Ian?”

“All I can think is that I left it at the
hospital. Maybe I should call and see.”

She nodded as she stood and picked up his
plate. Taking it to the sink, she rinsed it off before placing it
in the dishwasher. He followed her to refill his coffee. He was
watching how her skirt stretched across her ass as she bent over
when he saw a movement in his back yard.

“Shit,” was all he got out as he grabbed
Kara’s purse then yanked her out of the kitchen and into the
hallway.

Chapter 2

“Ian,” Kara chastised as he pulled her toward
his bedroom. He’d dreamed of having her in his bedroom, but not
under these circumstances and not for this purpose.

“There’s someone in the backyard,” he bit out
as he pulled her into his room and got the gun out of the safe by
the bed.

“Ian! What are you doing with a gun?”

“Kara, we need to get out of here. Did you
park on the left or the right of the driveway?”

“The right, closest to the front door,
why?”

Her brows knit together in confusion as he
put on the first T-shirt he came across. He took her hand and
pulled her behind him as he stopped by his office to get his laptop
and iPad, shoving them in a bag he dragged Kara with him. He
checked the alarm and it hadn’t gone off yet, so no one was inside
the house. He tripped the alarm manually and headed out to the
garage. He led her to his Tesla on the left side of the garage and
started to open the door for her, but she slammed it shut.

“What the hell is going on Ian?”

“Kara, I’m not exactly sure what’s going on,
but I think that someone thinks I’m Ronan, so we have to get out of
here. Do you have anything irreplaceable in your car?”

“How can you be so calm? I want to kill
Ronan, what the hell has he gotten you into?”

Us, Ian had almost said it out loud, but he
didn’t want her to realize she could be in danger. Hopefully it
wasn’t that dangerous anyway, but he’d have to break a promise to
Ronan and that was something he’d never done before.

“Kara, please, just get in the car and I’ll
explain. Do you have anything irreplaceable in your car?”

She shook her head and let him open the door
for her. Looking a little lost and scared, she slid into the
passenger seat. He wanted to kiss her, to reassure her, but he
worried she’d never forgive him if he took advantage of her fear.
Ian walked around to the driver’s side and threw her purse and his
bag into the back seat. He got into the driver’s seat and laid the
gun on his leg as he put on his seatbelt.

“Buckle up,” he told her, but she shook her
head.

“Not until you tell me where we’re going. I’m
in the car so where’s the explanation?”

Rather than speak, Ian released his buckle
and leaned over her to grab her seatbelt. She gasped and he froze
as his chest rubbed across hers. Her eyes widened as his hand
wrapped around the seatbelt. Ian’s eyes dropped to her mouth, which
had opened slightly when she’d gasped. Immediately, his heart rate
kicked up a notch as he realized she wasn’t resisting him or
pushing him away. He leaned in, almost unable to resist, when heard
a car door slam outside his garage somewhere. Realizing that her
safety was in his hands, Ian stopped his forward movement. Damn you
Ronan!

His eyes shot up to hers but he didn’t see
anger in them that he’d almost kissed her. Her gaze dropped to
where they were pressed together then came back up to meet his. He
pulled away, brought her seatbelt over her and buckled it then
buckled himself in and started the car. Ian had to keep his head on
straight. He always had a hard time when they were in such close
proximity and he could smell her nearby. And wasn’t it just his
luck he was wearing sweats and no underwear? All he could do was
not draw attention to his lap and hope she didn’t notice he was
hard as a rock and tenting his pants. He could still feel the
imprint her nipples had made on his chest.

Kara’s breath stalled in her chest. She could
have sworn he was about to kiss her. When he’d rubbed his chest
against her breasts, she’d almost moaned out loud. Her nipples had
immediately hardened at the friction. He’d leaned in with his eyes
on her mouth but then he’d looked her directly in the eye and
backed away. She wondered if maybe her breasts had pressed against
one of his bruises. Part of her was afraid he’d almost forgotten
who he was rubbing against and pulled back as soon as he
remembered. He was backing up the car and waited to the last second
before pressing the button to open the garage door.

“Get down,” he commanded.

Her mind was still fuzzy from the almost kiss
and she couldn’t take her eyes off the gun in his left hand.
Because she didn’t move, Ian cupped his right hand behind her neck
and pulled her head down against his chest as he backed the car up.
She’d closed her eyes when he’d pulled her toward him so sharply,
but when she opened them, she looked down. She was surprised to see
his erection standing straight up. She could see the outline of it
through the thin cotton of his pants. Her hands itched to reach out
and touch him. At least he wasn’t immune to her.

“Stay down,” he said as he lifted his hand
from her neck and put it back on the steering wheel.

She was going to fall over if she didn’t
support herself somehow so she braced her bent arms on his right
leg as she tried to stay out of the way. She knew they could be in
danger, but with her face in his lap, which was unbelievably
distracting. When she grabbed his leg, Ian groaned and she wondered
if he had more bruises along his legs. He backed up quickly and she
heard a car door slam and some yelling. As Ian sped away, a shot
rang out and the rear window shattered.

Kara couldn’t help but scream and cover her
ears. Her elbows landed on the console between the seat and she
found her face mere inches from Ian’s cloth covered penis. She had
it worse than she thought if Ian’s hardened genitalia could take
her mind off the fact someone was shooting at them. She groaned
with disappointment.

“Kara, are you OK? You can sit up now.”

“I’m fine though I had no idea this type of
excitement turned you on.” She hadn’t meant to tease, but it just
slipped out.

Ian needed her to sit up so he could
concentrate on driving. It was bad enough when he’d leaned over to
buckle her in. When she grabbed his leg, he knew it was simply to
support herself, but his whole body ached. He ached because he’d
gotten in a fight last night and he’d ached for her for three
years. His body could only handle one ache at a time.

“It’s not the action, love. I’d like to think
if my face was between your legs, you’d get a little turned on
too.”

She rolled her eyes; there was the Ian she
was used to. He made comments like that all the time and she hated
it. It constantly reminded her exactly what she was missing out on.
What she couldn’t have. He threw other women in her face, always
talking about dates and women were always calling him. She’d do
well to remember that’s what he was like.

“I’m sorry Kara. You teased, so I teased
back. It was automatic.”

He had seen her stiffen out of the corner of
his eye. He was used to giving her little barbs like that, but this
was not a good situation to get her ire up. He probably hadn’t done
himself any favors with that attitude anyway, but he couldn’t think
about that now. He had to get her out of this mess if there was
ever a chance of anything happening between them.

“Kara, can I use your phone?”

“Sure.”

With that, she unbuckled her seatbelt and
leaned into the backseat to grab her bag. He was distracted once
again by her ass as she pulled her bag from the back. She buckled
herself back in then began digging through the monstrosity she
called a purse to locate her phone.

“Do you want me to dial for you,” she said as
she handed him her Bluetooth earpiece.

Ian just shook his head as he set the gun in
his lap and took the earpiece. He placed it around his ear then
reached for the phone. He dialed Ronan’s number and waited for his
brother to answer. His eyes kept checking the rear view mirror and
he saw an SUV with tinted windows following his every turn but
staying about 4 cars back.

“Well, well are you calling to give me
another chance gorgeous?”

“Shut up Ronan!”

“Ian? What the hell! Don’t tell me you hit
that. Damn, I knew she was using me to make you jealous.”

Ian’s sucked in a breath and his eyes shot to
Kara. Was that true? Were they both trying to make each other
jealous? Were they both so busy trying to make each other jealous
that they hadn’t stopped to realize they both wanted each other? As
he watched Kara, she nervously looked behind them. That brought
back his sense of urgency. Did she know they were being followed or
just suspect?

“I went to your place last night and got
jumped on the way back to my car.”

“Fuck! My cover’s been blown. I knew that,
but I didn’t know they had my real address. Ian, are you OK?”

“I don’t have my cell so don’t answer if that
number calls you. I don’t know what happened to it so I had to use
Kara’s”

“Wait, so did she spend the night with you
then?”

“Ronan! I ended up in the ER. There were two
guys last night and they weren’t speaking English. It was
Slavic.”

“Romanian,” Ronan clarified.

“Whatever. I think they thought I was you. I
was trying to hold my own and one of your neighbors must have
called the cops. They interviewed me then took me to the ER. By the
time I got home it was morning. I passed out as soon as my head hit
the pillow and missed a very important meeting. When I was in the
kitchen this morning, I saw two men in my backyard.”

“Since when did you start running from just
two guys?”

“Since Kara was standing right next to
me!”

“She’s still with you?”

“Yes damn it and we’re being followed.”

“Shit man. I just thought you were using her
phone. I didn’t know she was there. So she spent the night with you
nursing your poor beaten body?”

“Rone! There were two cars in front of my
house. Two came through the backyard and one lookout in one car and
I don’t know how many are in the car following us.”

“Can you lose the tail?”

Like he had a choice? When he was younger,
he’d helped Ronan out simply for the excitement, but at 32, it
wasn’t so exciting anymore. Ronan was just two years younger and
would probably never tire of the shit he got himself into. It had
been a while since he’d helped with one of Ronan’s stings and he
wasn’t sure how legal it was back then. But Ronan tended to rope
family into these situations because he knew he could trust family
with his life. Ian eased onto the freeway so he could move to
higher speeds and hopefully lose the SUV.

“I can lose them, but my car isn’t exactly
inconspicuous any longer, especially with the back window shot
out.”

“Where are you?”

“Headed south on 90.”

“leanúint leis an uisce.”

“Are these guys familiar with the
suburbs?”

“I doubt it.”

Ronan was giving him a hint as to where he
was and he hadn’t given any signals to change direction, just that
he should stay close to Lake Michigan and follow the water. Their
native tongue wasn’t commonly spoken in Ireland let alone the rest
of the world so it was fairly safe. Ronan was either in Indiana or
Michigan. Ian also knew Ronan wouldn’t really tell him what was
going on until they were face to face. The bottom line was, both
their homes had been compromised and they’d likely have to
move…again.

“Iompair nua deartháir. You’ll also need a
disposable phone,” Ronan said in Irish.

Ian knew this meant his brother was worried
they were being listened to. What were the chances that some
Romanian thugs knew how to speak their native tongue? Ian
considered his options. Ronan was telling him to get a new car, not
that it hadn’t already crossed Ian’s mind considering the shot-out
back window.

“D'aontaigh,” Ian agreed.

“Bheith tapa agus a bheith cúramach,” Ronan
warned.

Ian rolled his eyes. His brother was stating
the obvious. They wouldn’t lose the tail if they didn’t go fast and
no way in hell was Ian going to be anything but careful with Kara
in the car. Knowing Ronan was waiting for confirmation, Ian
agreed.

“D'aontaigh,”

With that Ian hung up and knew Ronan was in
deep shit. If this were small potatoes Ronan would have come to
help him lose the tail and protect Kara. Then again, if it was just
Ian thrown into this, it wouldn’t be a big deal but those assholes
were shooting at Kara. That royally pissed him off. He was
beginning to worry his feelings for her ran deeper than even he
suspected and it was a hell of a time to be figuring that out.
