When the shadow stepped out from behind the black vehicle near the parking garage stairwell, she yelped. Carmen clutched her keys between her index and middle fingers, determined to take out her assailant’s eyes before she died.

“I missed that scream.”

It was the accountant, wearing khakis and a polo shirt. Dressy for any normal person, but probably as casual as he got.

She smiled, the thrill of seeing him here threatening to overwhelm her; expose her.

“You’re done with work awfully early,” she joked. It was twelve thirty in the morning.

He ignored her jest.

“My friend in HR was kind enough to figure out where you were working. I waited for a while last night but didn’t see you.”

Excitement hummed through her body. The almighty tax god sat in a parking lot last night waiting for
her
? Awesome.

“I got off last night,” she offered, biting her lip at the innuendo as soon as it came out.

“Did you? So does that mean you don’t want to get off tonight?” His grin was a crazy mix of innocence and evil. She pursed her lips in thought.

“How ’bout you follow me back to my place and we’ll see about that?” Carmen smiled seductively, picturing him scrubbing her back in the shower.

Suddenly she wasn’t nearly as tired as she thought.

born to a single Italian mother, was raised at the Jersey Shore when the Shore was still greatly underdeveloped and pristine. An only child, he was forced to use his imagination to entertain himself. Drawing from a vast wealth of creativity, which permeates his writing, Mancini has become one of today’s most identifiable authors.
