In earlier novels I have indicated my debt to the research facilities of the Thomas Cooper Library at the University of South Carolina, and to its longtime director, Dr. George Terry. George passed away in 2001 and is greatly
missed. He was not only a trained historian and a superb library administrator, he became a close and valued friend. His death was untimely; he was only fifty-two.

Clare Ferraro and Louise Burke enthusiastically endorsed the idea for the novel when they were directly associated with Dutton. Clare's successor as publisher, my old friend Carole Baron, was similarly enthusiastic. I thank all of them, along with my editor, Doug Grad, his able assistant, Ron Martirano, and art director Rich Hasselberger. As a scarred veteran of advertising, I can offer fully qualified professional admiration of Rich's skill. He has created a striking and appropriate format for the jackets of my books.

Frank R. Curtis, Esq., of New York, my attorney and literary representative for more than twenty-five years, provided the usual stalwart support for the project.

And my wife, Rachel, again helped me through the inevitable struggle that accompanies the writing of a long manuscript. To her I renew my debt of love and devotion.
