She climbed the staircase to the airplane door. The entrance of the small Boeing jet looked like any other plane but that was where the similarities ended. Even first-class couldn't compare. Instead of rows of chairs there was a lounge lined with leather seats and tables.

"Welcome aboard "a finely dressed steward said.

“Thank you.”  Another striking feature was the lack of people. "Am I the first to arrive?”

"You are the only passenger.”

The plane transported diplomats and staff around the world. She naturally assumed she would be flying with others. "Where should I sit?”

"Wherever you want, Your Highness. There is a bedroom through the cabinet doors. I would suggest you wait until take off but of course the choice is yours. "

A bedroom?
She half expected to see a crew jump out and say "Smile. You're on candid camera. “She settled into a soft leather seat and buckled her belt.

“Are you ready to depart?”

“Is the pilot ready?” she asked.

“We depart on your word, Princess.”

Within minutes of her answer, they taxied down the runway, turned and took off to the sky. The lights of the city got further away until they looked like tiny specks in the darkness. A few ear-popping seconds later she was in the clouds but her head had been there since embarking the plane.

She wanted to explore but the seatbelt light remained on. Who was going to stop her?
Certainly not the steward who sat near the cockpit awaiting any request from her. She had none.

Her curiosity got the better of her and she made her way to the bedroom. Bedroom was accurate as the king size platform and mattress took up most of the area. Sitting in the center of the striking green duvet sat a black velvet box.

"Go ahead take it. It's for you. "

She gasped and spun around. Her heart raced first with fright and then with pure excitement. “Sami?” she tried to say, but nothing came out.  She could only stare. He was a gorgeous sight! If she had a camera she would snap a picture. Next time someone questioned her decision to stay married she would hold it up and say, "That's why."

"Has the sight of me rendered you mute?"

She shook her head to clear the fog. It didn’t help. “A heads up would have been nice.”

"What's the fun in that?”

She had said she was in it for the fun. Would it ever get old?  Lord she hoped not.
But what about him? Would he lose interest?

He stepped closer, and captured her in a gentle embrace. “Don’t go there.”

“Where?”

“Where ever that suspicious frown is taking you.” He dropped onto bed, pulling her next to him. The box bounced and landed by his shoulder. “Open it.”

By the small size it could only be one thing. Still she hadn’t expected the band of white gold and diamonds. “A wedding ring?”

“I’d call it a ball and chain but I’m guessing that you want to be marked as a married woman.”

Her heart dropped and it wasn’t turbulence. “I guess that means you don’t plan to wear one?”

“I can’t buy it for myself.”

“What does that mean, Sami? I choose to wear the ring because it says I love you and I don’t want to belong to anybody else but you. What does it mean to you?”

“I realize that given my past…”

“This isn’t about your past.” Sometimes the man could be so damned obtuse. He didn’t need to spout sonnets but she needed some sign that marriage was not one sided.   “It’s about our future. I find your sarcasm funny. Your chauvinism endearing. And your one track mind exciting.”

“When you’re not turning scarlet?”

“That’s not the point.  I will not share you with other women.” She had never thought of herself as a possessive woman. Then again she had never met a man she wanted to possess.

He chuckled. “
Lilah, I can barely keep up with you. I don’t need more women.” He pressed a kiss to her lips.  “I will happily wear a ring but you have to give it to me. That’s the tradition here.”

“Oh.”  After her embarrassment faded a new kind of warmth spread through her.
The kind that reached inside and touched her heart. “And if I had one engraved with a ball and chain, would you still wear it?”

“I would love it.
And the woman who gives it to me.”

He rose from the bed and started to undress. She stared like a besotted idiot for several seconds before his words sank in. She sprung to her feet and stood in front of him. “What did you just say, Sami?”

“No. Forget it. I am not saying it again. You snooze you lose.”

It was her turn to laugh. He said it. She heard it. And he knew it.
“Too late to take it back.”

He stopped with his own cloths to work on removing hers. Words were never his strong suit. He was a man of action and he had a twelve hour plane ride to convince her he meant it. She wouldn’t tell him until landing she was already convinced.

About
the Author

Like most authors, I didn't start out as a writer, but rather as a reader. My passion for romance novels began in my late teens and left me with an itch to discover the world.

After living in places as culturally diverse as Athens, Greece and Cairo, Egypt (where I met and married my own romantic hero), we returned to the States.

From a very young age, I showed an aptitude for telling stories. Of course my mother called me a pathological liar, but I prefer to think back on those days as an apprenticeship for my future craft.
