“True,” Rex agreed.

“So why did you let me do it?” she asked, placing blame on him, just for kicks and perhaps the promise of punishment.

Luke winked. “You seemed hell bent on staying in bed.”

“I’m still pretty determined to stay
there
.”

Rex stalked her. “Well, why didn’t you say so?”

“But,” she began, placing her hands out in front of her, “you’ll have to wait until I get back. I have a busy weekend ahead of me and you have a farm to manage.”

“Luke can take care of this place. I’m going with you.”

“To hear you tell it, you aren’t too big on racing now.”

“I’m not,” he said, grabbing hold of her and guiding her palm to his cock. “But I’m really big on you.”

Chapter Twenty-Three

The next day

Nashville
,
Tennessee

Lucy loved racing, and part of the reason she enjoyed the sport so much was because of the atmosphere. The smell of carnival-style food filled the stands as she sat in the bleachers with Luke and Rex. “I still don’t understand why you don’t want to be in the pits with me.”

“Are you crazy? We have a much better view right here,” Rex pointed out.

“The suites are more comfortable. Heck, the top of some of the drivers’ RVs are more comfortable than this.”

“We’re content,” Rex assured her, kissing her cheek.

“I’m not,” she said. “I want you down there with me.”

Luke frowned. “I like being here in the stands.” He pointed at the small blue cooler tucked under his seat. “I can drink, eat, and be merry. I don’t have to listen to the cursing down in the pits or worry about whether or not I’m getting in your way. I’m satisfied right here. Thank you very much.”

Lucy stuck out her lip.

“Don’t start that,” Rex scolded her. “We came here for moral support. We’ll come down to the infield after one of your drivers skids across victory lane. Deal?”

Noncommittally, she mumbled, “Hmm, if you say so.”

“By the way,” Luke said. “What’s your feeling about the race today?”

“Billy all the way,” Lucy replied. “He’s the next Earnhardt. He drives like him. I’m telling you, once he starts winning races, there’s no stopping him.”

“Sounds more like Kurt what’s-his-name to me,” Rex said.

“You really don’t know anything about racing, do you?” Lucy asked.

Luke unwrapped a corndog and stuffed the end between his lips. Around a mouthful of cornbread, he said, “Damn that’s good.”

“The best corndogs in the world are found at a racetrack. Trust me, if you stick with racing, both of you will become junk food junkies. You’ll gain a lot of weight if you visit those concession stands often enough.”

Rex scooted to the edge of his seat and pointed toward the track, “Hey, isn’t that one of your drivers down there?”

Lucy took a deep breath and slowly released it, watching as Scott Leonardo’s wife struck him with a racing flag over and over again. “Yes.”

Luke took another bite of his corndog. “That’s the funniest damn thing I’ve ever seen.”

Scott’s wife chased him up and down the small stretch of track right in front of their team’s cars. It was bad enough that they aired their dirty laundry on talk shows, but right before a race? Well, she just didn’t have the patience anymore. She should’ve had Rex put a clause in Scott’s contract. He could drive for them as long as he lost wife number six.

Rex laughed. A rare sighting, he threw his head back and just cackled. “What the hell did he do anyway?”

“He slept with his ex-wife, the woman who was with him at last night’s picnic.”

Luke dabbed his mouth with a napkin and cracked open a beer. “I thought that gal there looked a little heavier than the woman he brought to the farm.”

Lucy shrugged. “He’d better not piss her off. Her daddy’s company, Callaway Home Improvement, has been sponsoring his car since he was dumped three years ago. The last thing he needs right now is a divorce. No one else will pick him up.”

Scott’s wife walloped him again. This time, she chose to smack him across the face with the end of the flag. “Ouch!” Rex bellowed. “If you ever did that to me, I’d spank your ass raw.”

“Then find me a flag!” she exclaimed, pecking his cheek before blowing a kiss Luke’s direction.

“You love it when I burn your ass, don’t you, subbie?”

She gulped. Her nipples spiked, and she cussed under her breath. “How do you do that?’

He winked. “Next race, I’ll show you. I’ll stuff a small dildo in your pussy and make you wear around a small vibrating reminder throughout the race. You’ll think about us for two hundred and fifty laps.”

Good Lord, she needed to get down to the infield. If she didn’t get away from these two soon, she’d spend the first fifty laps of this race fooling around in the team trailer.

Luke leaned forward and cocked his head. “Looks like your driver caught the wrong attention. Seems he’s in a little bit of trouble now.”

She nodded, noting Bob Killian’s fast approach. The wayward couple continued their public tussle while cameras rolled and reporters waited with microphones already aimed toward the pair. “They always get fined. That’s why Scott stays on the talk show circuit. He owes so many penalties, if he doesn’t start winning races, he’ll probably need to get a network to pick him up for his own reality television series.”

After a group laugh, Rex said, “Good luck out there today.”

Luke winked. “You’ve got this win.”

She looked at the men she loved. “You’re right. I’ve got this win. I’m the luckiest woman alive!”

* * * *

Lucy was on pins and needles a few hours later. Her crews were working hard for their money. Crew chiefs were doing everything they could to make the day end on a positive note, but with forty-one laps to go, the only possibility her team had was if Billy pulled it out. Leading in laps, the kid and another driver, Dale McGuiness, fought for first and second.

A caution was out, and Billy came in for a new set of tires. “Smart move! Smart move!” she exclaimed, watching as he took his place on the tracks again, leading the pack. Lucy stood on her tiptoes, searching the track in an effort to account for her cars.

Lucy was right in the middle of coaching another driver, when Fred Graves walked up behind her. “A good day for the team, isn’t it?”

“Fred, I don’t have time for this,” she replied, looking around to see if anyone was nearby, someone who might come to her rescue. “If you have something to say, you probably need to wait until Rex and Luke are around.”

“You’ll make time. What I want to say to you doesn’t require an audience,” he explained, grabbing her by the arm and pushing her in a nearby camper, a fifth wheel owned by one of her drivers.

Once inside, Fred shoved a package in her direction. “Here. I owe you this.”

“What is it?” she asked, looking down at a bulging manila envelope.

“This is what I was asked to relinquish by those two idiots you hired.”

“Rex and Luke aren’t idiots. They’re my boyfriends. Soon they’ll become my husbands.”

He jerked, shook his head, and then started to say something. Thinking better of it, apparently, he said, “I don’t care who they are. You tell them you saw me. You make sure they understand that I have a reputation to protect. My family is well respected in stock car racing. If I have to, I’ll go to my father. He’ll take care of this in a court of law.”

He was bluffing, of course, but the last thing Lucy wanted was to see this situation tried in a court of law. They could reach a settlement between them. She thought they already had.

Lucy opened the flap to the envelope and pulled out the discs. After she tucked them safely away again, she said, “Fred, thank you.”

“I don’t want your gratitude. I want you to protect me like I’m now protecting you. I’ve scratched your back. I could’ve taken those copies straight to the McDavids. There are certain graphics captured that I don’t think you’d want your men to see.”

“I appreciate you,” she said, following his meaning. She remembered the time she’d spent with Fred. She understood how much she’d opened herself up to scrutiny.

“Remember what I said. Tell them to back off.” He stormed away and slammed the door behind him. Lucy sat down on a nearby chair, placed the envelope on the table and stared at the only evidence of a past she hoped to eventually forget.

Minutes later, Rex and Luke rushed inside the trailer. “Where is he?” Rex demanded.

“He’s gone,” she replied, arching a brow. “How’d you know he was here?”

Luke dug into his shirt pocket and revealed a small pair of binoculars. “We kept you in our sights.”

She smiled. “I should’ve known.”

Rex pointed at the table. “Is that what I think it is?”

“Yes,” she replied, pushing the envelope his way. “I’d rather you didn’t watch these, but if it’s something you need to do, then view these when I’m not around, okay?”

Luke took her in his arms and held her. “Honey, we don’t need to see those.”

“You aren’t curious?”

“No,” Rex assured her, too. “Why would we want to watch you with someone else? You please us in every way imaginable. We don’t need to see how or where you gained your experience.”

Luke kissed her then, his tongue parting her lips with a slow and seductive kiss. “I love you, Lucy. You’re my heart.”

“You’re mine,” she assured him. Turning to Rex, she said, “And you’re mine.”

“Yes,” he agreed. “I certainly am. And I’ll love you until the day I die.”

“Sometimes I think both of you have loved me since the day I was born.”

Luke shrugged, shot Rex a knowing smile, and then said, “Sometimes I think you’re right.”

“Put this someplace safe. I need to go out here and congratulate a driver,” she said, patting the delivered package.

“The race isn’t over yet,” Rex said, looking confused. “There should be about fifteen laps left to go.”

“That sounds about right, but when you belong in the winner’s circle, you see a victory coming from miles away.”
